I'm back! Did you miss me? It's time for you weekly dose of Friday Feelgood!
I wasn't here last week because I was in Innsbruck, Austria at the #rollerderbyworldcup!
What's gone well for you this week? - share below so we can all bask in your joy!
My #FridayFeelgood this week comes in the form of rejuvenated love for sport and my involvement in the Roller Derby World Cup 2025.
For a very long time (10 years or so) I played the wacky sport of roller derby for Belfast (my home team) and internationally for Team Ireland . Since retiring in about 2019 I've always stayed involved in some way, whether that was as a coach or an announcer.
One of the first people I met in roller derby from 'across the water' got back in touch with me as the announcing crew were looking for producers. Knowing that I had some experience in TV production and could be handy round a microphone she knew it would be right up my street!
I headed off to Innsbruck not entirely sure what to expect but knowing that the roller derby community was a great one, I wasn't perturbed about heading along alone.
I had one evening to get used to my surroundings before we started nice and early around 8am, which would be the theme for the next four days. I was on a team that worked from 8am to about 6 or 7pm every evening providing in-house announcing, live stream announcing and video.
As a producer, my job was to sit next to the announcers on the live stream and give them updates on the game and listen out to them ticking the boxes for our commercial advertising commitments. I have to be honest, the level of professionalism in all crews I worked with meant that my job was relatively stress free and a lot of fun, although quite intense at times.
From the second, third and fourth days I worked as both producer and in-house announcer which really is great fun, a chance to talk about the nitty gritty of the sport and keep the audience motivated to cheer for their team.
This weekend will stay with me for a long time and it's given me the opportunity to learn a lot of new skills which I hope to put to the test again soon!
Let me know your feel goods and if you're in NI this weekend, please stay safe and have a great time in the nice weather!
Until next week....
